The Pickering Soccer Centre Welcomes The Speed Academy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 29, 2016 – Pickering, Ontario  The Pickering Soccer Club (PSC) is pleased to announce that the Pickering Soccer Centre is the new home of the Speed Academy Athletics Club. The development track and field training program moved to the newly installed indoor track at the Pickering Soccer Centre last month.

The 125 metre long, four lane track is the only indoor track in the GTA which allows runners to sprint a full 100m indoor. The BASF Conipure Conica surface was intentionally increased from 9mm to 13mm to reduce the risk of runners developing any shin-splint issues. The four lanes are marked for IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federation) specification 110m men and 100m women hurdles. A number of Canada’s elite track and field athletes have already used the new track including sprint sensation Andre DeGrasse and Olympic 100 meter hurdle finalist Philicia George.

PSC President Corrado Roccasalva notes, “It was clear early in the process that the track would be an essential design component of the Pickering Soccer Centre. We also understood the direct impact on our ability to deliver the club’s physical literacy programs, yet with our Speed Academy relationship, and access for the general public, its use extends beyond the confines of the Club. We are extremely grateful to work with the City of Pickering; the facility and now the track, will help provide opportunities for our community to engage in physical activities promoting a healthy lifestyle.”

The Speed Academy and PSC have shared a long and mutually beneficial partnership dating back to 2004 with the track club developing and delivering physical literacy training programs to young soccer players for over ten years. Tony Sharpe, Head Coach of The Speed Academy commented, “Access to indoor training facilities is a major challenge for track athletes in the Durham Region. We are thrilled and grateful that the Pickering Soccer Club and the City of Pickering have given us the option to train in our local community. This multi-sport facility concept will certainly help with getting the community engaged in more physical activity.” Please contact the Speed Academy at info@speedacademy.ca for more info.

The track is available for public use during business hours at a rate of $5.00 per visit and memberships are available for track clubs. The Pickering Soccer Centre is conveniently located at 1975 Clements Road in Pickering, one traffic light south of Bayly St., east from Brock Road or west from Church St.
