  Power Gold U13G (1998) - What an Excellent Season! - September 2011

The Pickering Power Gold U13 Girls team is wrapping up an excellent season. 

In July the team travelled to the US for a tournament in Rochester.    The girls were playing in record breaking heat but stepped up to the challenge.    With an impressive round robin finishing first in there group the team went straight to the final game.  Pickering scored 3 unanswered goals to beat their opponents the Spenceport Strikers 3 nil.

The team went undefeated in their regular season winning all 14 games and claiming the CESL league championship.  The teams defence and offence where very impressive all season only allowing 11 goals against them and countering with 60 of their own goals to dominated the division.  

In August the girls also traveled to Uxbridge to playing the CESL Cup Tournament. Pickering defeated their Whitby opponents to also claim CESL Cup Championship.

The team is coached by Glenn Scheepstra and John Kavoukis who stated that they were very proud of how hard the girls work all season to earn their titles and look forward to moving up a division next year.

Pickering Power Gold U11G (2000) - Perseverance Leads to Success - August 23, 2011

The “Pickering Power Gold U11 Girls” team started their season in the league with 3 losses & 2 ties before experiencing their first win.  The girls are a hard working group, who have shown character and determination all summer long.

They recently participated in the Kitchener Invitational Tournament on August 13^th and 14^th 2011. The tournament started out on a very hot Saturday with 3 games to be played in 30 degree + weather conditions. That did not slow our girls down, who showed they were up to the task. They won their first game, tied the second and won the critical third game, going unbeaten and thus qualifying them to play in the Finals on Sunday, against a very tough” Kitchener A” team. The final game was very exciting with Pickering starting off with a goal 10 minutes into the first half. Kitchener however, recovered very quickly with the equalizer. Kitchener were then up 2 -1 early in the second half. Being down a goal did not dampen the spirits of our girls, who re-grouped very quickly to score the equalizer and then went on to win the game and cup, with a 3 – 2 final score. The girls continue to rally each week, and are slowly but surely, creeping up to 3rd place ranking in their division. Hello everybody;

I just got some wonderful news.  I received a letter from Mayor Dave Ryan and the City of Pickering stating that I have been selected to receive the City of Pickering Civic Award for Disability Issues.  This award is for our efforts for our Special Needs Soccer program.

I consider this an award for the entire Pickering Soccer Club and all those who have contributed to the success of the program, on behalf of which I am honoured to accept.  I would like to especially thank Danyelle Sora for all her hard work and who is most responsible for the tremendous growth and success of the program last year, Tony and Nina Cancellara for their generous sponsorship to make the program essentially free for our athletes to participate, Shelly Augustin for her significant contributions to the entire program including publicity, fundraising, and planning, and to Shelly Augustin and Dave Sora for their dedication and persistence in winning our significant grant support for our program.

A huge thank you to all our volunteer coach mentors who have done a fantastic job with our athletes.  Our athletes enjoy soccer and keep coming back mainly because of your efforts!

Lastly, a special message to our athletes and their families: Thank you so much for your patience and dedication to the program.  Together we have built a much needed program that we can all be proud of.  The future of our program looks very bright and I look forward to some great summer evenings of soccer with my athletes this season!

The awards ceremony is on Monday May 30^th, 7pm in the Council Chambers of the Pickering Civic Complex.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Whitby tournament was played this past Sat Sept 25th as a one day tournament.  The Pickering Power U11G All Star team worked hard all year long and in their last run as a team took home the great prize of Finalist in Whitby’s All Star Tournament.  The day started with a 4 -2 win vs. Kitchener with goals scored by Felicia, Devyn, Gillian and Brittney; (special mention to Alexis who set up 3 of those 4 goals that game).

Our 2^nd game was a nail biter vs. Ajax and with minutes remaining Vanessa scored the go ahead goal to win the match 2 -1.  The other goal scored was by Felicia.

The last game was a tough one and Pickering ended up losing to Aurora in the final 5 – 1, with our only goal scored off a penalty kick by Erin.  Our Goalies Charlize and Claudia Z played wonderfully and kept us competitive with all the teams we faced all day long.

“The team worked extremely hard all year and if any one group of girls deserved this it was them. I was proud to be a part of this team and I wish them all well and even more success in the seasons to come. I am sad the year is over but I look forward to another run next year. Also I would like to thank Pickering Soccer Club for a great 2010 All Star program and our sponsors Lone Star Grill and Gino Sgovio - Treco Real Estate for all their support.”

“I believe that a great part of their successes this year could be attributed to the players’ willingness to work hard and to play together as a team.  It also highlights the power of commitment and positive thinking, because after losing our third final of the season in Barrie, the guys became committed to the belief that they could, and would, win this final tournament – for which they worked very hard, and as they so capably did.  I believe this past season has provided a great deal of fun and learning regardless of tournament results; but, I think the joys of victory and sorrows of defeat that accompanied each of their three prior championship attempts became assimilated into the deep sense of satisfaction they could each have in knowing they had finally achieved a victory for which every player had worked so hard.  I am proud to know every member of this team – they have taught me much.”  Coach Jamie Simm.

The 2001 Power Green girls continued their terrific season by winning the Durham Soccer League Cup on the weekend of August 21/22.

The Power were drawn into a very difficult first round group, with Whitby “A” and Darlington “A”. The Power faced Darlington in the first game and the day and served notice that they were serious about challenging as Champions. The Power ran away 4-1 winners.

The second game of the day vs. Whitby “A” was another classic. Both teams created numerous chances, but could not find the back of the net. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. The Power then took on Whitby “B” in their crossover game and won 6-0.

The Power finished 1^st in their group and faced an extremely stubborn Oshawa Tural in the semi-final on Sunday. The Power took the early lead and finished the game as 4-1 winners.

The Cup final was a rematch from the round robin, as Whitby “A” also won their semi-final game. Whitby scored half way through the first half and defended extremely well for the remainder of the game. With time running out and the Power winning a corner kick, they threw their goalkeeper forward who was able to poke the ball past a helpless Whitby keeper. The goal was the last kick of the game for either team in regulation.

Two 5 minute overtimes solved nothing and the Cup final was headed to penalties. Whitby scored on their first kick and missed the next two, the Power scored on all four penalties to be crowned Champions of the Durham Soccer League Cup.

Congratulations to the girls who were fantastic all weekend, you deserved it!

The Pickering Power Green U9 Girls rep soccer team recently won their second tournament of the year after being crowned Champions of the North Toronto Mini Cup.

Pickering faced Unionville in the final and made sure that they would be declared Champions as the stole the ball on the opening kick off and marched up the field to take the early lead. The Power never looked back from that point and scored 7 more to runaway with the Title.
