All Abilities Delivers

All athletes love to put on a uniform, be part of a team, enjoy the great outdoors and feel the thrill of friendly competition playing soccer, “the beautiful game”.  In 2008, along with a few dedicated volunteer coaches, we launched our very first All Abilities soccer program.  Partnering with Special Olympics Ontario we offered “grassroots” soccer programs for those in our community with special needs.

Our first winter, only 1 to 3 athletes came out to play each week.  The following summer we grew to 7 athletes and 7 volunteers.  From that humble beginning, we have grown to become the largest soccer program for athletes with exceptional needs in Durham region (maybe in all of Canada).  Each year we are now serving over 150 athletes and 75 dedicated volunteer coach and mentors.  We accommodate athletes requiring mobility devices, exceptional care through 1:1 coaching and also feature opportunities for tournaments, festivals and travel.

The All Abilities program now provides year-round sessions, including additional outreach programs in partnership with Holland Bloorview Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital, Grandview Children’s Centre, Para Sport Ontario and Hincks-Dellcrest.

The benefits of the All Abilities program extends beyond the field with community events and social functions. We foster personal growth in physical literacy and critical life skills such as self-esteem, self-confidence and social skill development within a team sport.

The primary objective of the All Abilities Program is to provide the opportunity for children and youth of all abilities, including those with special needs, physical and/or intellectual disabilities to play soccer, have fun, form friendships and participate in a team sport.
